Anti-Racism Consultant

created: Jul 16, 2019

Human Rights & Discrimination Circle, Calgary Indigenous Sharing Network Coalition

PROJECT HISTORY AND DESCRIPTION

This project aims to build the capacities of agencies, groups and individuals in Calgary with special interest in combating racism and discrimination against Indigenous Peoples through awareness-raising and strategic collaborations. Through five community grassroots gatherings held in Calgary, the development of a Community Plan and need for this project came to light.

Through Native Counselling Services of Alberta, the Human Rights Circle submitted a proposal to the Government of Alberta in January 2019 and received an Anti-Racism Community Grant to create anti-racism resources for use in public education within Calgary.  Based on the feedback from discussions at the Grassroots Gatherings, Calgary’s Indigenous community members and other marginalized groups, as well as, service providers, agencies, and organizations reported experiencing both systemic discrimination and individual racism. An anti-racism toolkit will be designed and utilized within the community over the course of workshops involving approximately 48 multi-sectoral organizations with the goal to integrate the TRC’s Calls to Action and UNDRIP standards as appropriate into the policies, procedures and practices of these targeted institutions.
