In Need of Participants – Alberta – Hate Crimes Community Liaisons
created: Dec 8, 2023
We hope this email finds you well. We are looking for your help in connecting with people who have reported a hate crime or incident to an organization in Alberta over the past five years.
When we were appointed as Hate Crimes Community Liaisons, we were mandated to make recommendations to the provincial government on improving their way of addressing hate crimes and incidents. To ensure that our recommendations align with the priorities of Albertans, we have conducted over 20 focus groups to people across ten municipalities, as well as with organizations and institutions who regularly interface with hate crimes and incidents. However, we have not specifically connected with people who have experienced and reported hate crimes and incidents in the province within the scope of this engagement. We believe that these perspectives will help us better understand firsthand how hate crimes and incidents are addressed in the province. This input will further strengthen our recommendations in victim-centered ways based on lived experiences alongside input from existing engagement information and other research.
As such, we ask for your help to connect with up to 30 people over 18 years of age who have reported a hate crime or incident to an organization in Alberta over the last five years. To discuss scheduling an interview, please direct interested participants to contact us at HateCrimesCommunityLiaisons@gov.ab.ca.
We wish to ask individuals 7 questions about what hate crime or incident they reported, who they reported to, what the response from the organization was to their report, and what worked and could have been improved about these responses. The full list of interview questions will be made available to participants who express interest in participation. All participants are eligible to have a support person and/or interpreter available during the interview. We believe that a virtual interview will be the most effective form of engagement. However, participants will also have the option to submit a written response to these questions as an alternative to participating in an interview, with opportunities for clarification available. All participants and interpreters will be compensated $50 for participating in the interview or written testimony. Participants will be provided with a resource list before they participate in the interviews, and will be able to skip questions or stop the interview at any time.
